Ruth V. Aguilera is the Distinguished Darla and Frederick Brodsky Trustee Professor in Global Business in International Business and Strategy at the D’Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University and a Visiting Professor at ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain.

She spent the 2014-2015 academic year as a Visiting Full Professor in the Department of Strategy and Policy, at the National University of Singapore Business School. Before going to South East Asia, she was a Professor at the College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign—where she had been since receiving her Master and PhD in Organizational Sociology at Harvard University.

Ruth’s research interests lie at the intersection of strategic organization, economic sociology and global strategy, specializing in international and comparative corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, and firm internationalization.

For example, she analyzes together with co-authors how different type of owners (family, state, institutional investors, etc.) influence firm strategies ranging from internationalization, non-market strategies such as lobbying, and investment in sustainability. She has looked at the performance and strategic impact of multiple corporate governance best practices such as board diversity, auditing schemes, compensation, and board development.

She has over 70 articles published in top peer reviewed management journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of International Business Studies, Organization Science, and Strategic Management Journal, among others, as well as multiple book chapters and an edited book. Her research is well referenced with over 25,000 google scholar citations and being acknowledged on the “List of the Most Highly Cited Researchers” in the Web of Science.

 

 

Academic Service

Professor Aguilera is an active journal editor. She is currently a Senior Editor at Organization Science, an Associate Editor at Academy of Management Review, a Senior Editor at Corporate Governance: An International Review, a Consulting Editor at the Journal of International Business Studies and Global Strategy Journal. She has also contributed as a Guest Editor for multiple special issues at Academy of Management Perspectives, Journal of World Business, Advances in Strategic Management, and more recently Strategy Science

She serves on the editorial boards of Academy of Management Perspectives, Academy of Management Review, Global Strategy Journal, Organization Studies, and Strategic Management Journal. She was re-elected to the Board of Directors of the Strategic Management Society and the International Corporate Governance Society. She has been inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of International Business and the Strategic Management Society.

 

 

Professor Aguilera is married, lives between Boston and Barcelona, has three kids and no pets. She enjoys hanging out with her family and friends, cooking Catalan food, doing outdoor sports and traveling.
